Girl, Woman, Other is a magnificent portrayal of the intersections of identity and a moving and hopeful story of an interconnected group of Black British women that paints a vivid portrait of the state of contemporary Britain and looks back to the legacy of Britain’s colonial history in Africa and the Caribbean.”
May 13, 2021: There There by Tommy Orange, copyright 2018
There There, about Native Americans living in modern-day Oakland, was widely hailed as one of the best novels of 2018. An enrolled member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma, Orange lives in California and teaches writing at the Institute of American Indian Arts. “There There” explores what it means to be an urban Indian. It features a wide cast of characters who are all Native American, but with varying degrees of connection to the culture.
