The UUCT Book Group has selected the books for November, and December, so that participants will have time to acquire and read the books.

Dec 9, 2021: Henry Ossian Flipper: West Point's First Black Graduate by Jane Eppinga, 1996
Discussion leader: Diana B

This book was recommended to Diana by the late Winn Bundy, owner of the Singing Winds bookstore in Benson AZ. “The literary center of the universe is supposed to be in New York, but here was this shining light of the literary world living and working on a ranch outside Benson, Arizona,” said J.A. Jance. Bundy earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the UA in 1956 and later master’s degrees in history and library science.

Jan 13, 2022: The Overstory by Richard Powers, 2018
Discussion leader: Marge H

“The Overstory” is a complex novel that begins with several apparently unrelated stories about people throughout the country and across the centuries: There’s a Norwegian immigrant who travels to Iowa and begins homesteading before the Civil War. There’s also a video game pioneer, an intellectual-property lawyer, an amateur actress and a soldier in the Vietnam War whose life is saved when a 300-year-old banyan catches his body falling from a plane. “He owes his own life to a tree,” Powers writes. That, in short, is the point of “The Overstory”: We all owe our lives to trees, these massive air purifiers and soil conditioners that have made human civilization possible. – Wash Post review
