Unitarian Universalist Church of Tucson

Feb 9: Social Justice and Education

We welcome diversity. We commit to undo racism and all other oppressions in ourselves, our church, and our community.

"When we’re talking about diversity, it’s not a box to check. It is a reality that should be deeply felt and held and valued by all of us."
Ava DuVernay

Social Justice

The Social Justice Council, meets on the 2nd Saturday of each month at 11am.  All are invited to participate.
The Social Justice Council is once again holding sign vigilsin front of the church on the fourth Tuesday of the month, from 8:00 to 8:45. We have signs reflecting our values, or you can bring your own. If you haven't come before, come join us!
Our Share the Plate for the month of February is Angel Heart Pajama Project: ANGEL
Angel Heart Pajama Project is a non-profit organization that provides pajamas and books to children in need.
  • New pajamas, new books, and cuddle pillows give children a comforting and nurturing bedtime routine and promotes literacy.
  • Since 2013 Angel Heart Pajama Project has delivered close to 30,000 pajamas and books.
  • Established a library at Tucson Children’s Clinic located near TMC campus.
  • Promoted literacy and literacy development through the love books and pajamas.
Angel Heart Pajama Project’s primary purpose is to distribute new pajamas, books, and cuddle pillows to enrich children’s lives and to share love. The children we help are in foster care, shelters, or are homeless. By providing free pajamas and books to children, we are able to bring the comfort of a warm hug at bedtime.
The impact of an investment in Angel Heart Pajama Project will be profound.
  • Children will have a sense of ownership in new pajamas and a new book.
  • Children will experience a sense of self, comfort, and security.
  • Children will participate in literacy development activities.
  • Children will develop a love for reading, which is the first step to literacy.
Our Share the Plate for the month of January was UUJAZ. We collected $238 that was sent to them last week! Thank you to everyone who donated.

But I Think We’re Nice! with Bob Gordon
Feb. 13 | 12:15-1:15pm | Zoom
This idea comes from conversations I’ve had over the years, many of them at UUCT. Is it possible to be nice, and still oppressive? We will come up with examples of oppression in situations of power imbalance, from our own lives.…even when the oppressor was “nice.” What role did we play?
