Dec 22: Weekly Updates

We welcome diversity. We commit to undo racism and all other oppressions in ourselves, our church,

and our community.

The rooms were very still while the pages were softly turned and the winter sunshine crept in to touch the bright heads and serious faces with a Christmas greeting.

Worship and Other Announcements

Sunday Worship, December, 2021:

Our theme this month is "Becoming"

We Are Becoming

When we think about becoming, we often think first of growing, of becoming more and more. But becoming isn’t always about expanding and adding alone. Much of the time it requires a letting go before we can let in.

Who are we meant to become? What unique gifts can we share with the world? That is for us to find out for our whole lives. Growing into what special and unique about us isn’t always easy. Society is constantly pressuring us to become something we’re not. So, what’s one of the ways our faith guides us to being a people of Becoming? It tells us, “Resist what others want you to be and become your true and unique self!”

Christmas Eve Services

All are invited to special in-person Christmas Eve services on the UUCT patio on December 24ththis year. Because space on the patio will be limited, staff and our choir are hosting four services on December 24th. We will have two pageant services (at 2:30 and 3:30 pm) and two contemplative services (at 4:30 and 5:30 pm). Each service will have the same words and music, with slightly different moods. To make sure that we have a seat for you, please sign up each member of your family for the service you plan to attend. If you cannot use the Signup Genius, call the front office.

If you're attending the UUCT Pageant services on Dec. 24 and want to dress up, come pick up a costume from us! I'll have pieces from past pageants including sparkly stars, wise people, and animals of all kinds. OR come to the pageant in your own costume. ALL costumes welcome.

Update on Sunday Morning Worship in 2022

Starting in January, the Baja 4 collaborative worships will shift to happen about once every few months. This is aligning with each of our congregations livestreaming and/or gathering in person for worship. The Baja 4 will continue to collaborate and focus on creating innovative worship services on 5th Sundays and occasional other Sundays. The first of those Innovative Baja 4 Worships will be on Sunday, January 30th to celebrate and dedicate Mountain Vista's new building. All other Sundays, UUCT will continue to livestream from Holland and eventually offer in-person worship when the policies allow. Join us on our YouTube channel on Sunday mornings at 10:30 am: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCczvU-NhNhTbUp-qAIbQ4bg
The Baja 4 is also currently investing in robust and quality lifespan faith development for all of our congregations. Contact Jamili if you want to be on their mailing list to learn about those opportunities.

Rev. Bethany will lead a prerecorded service, Sunday December 26, 2021, at 10:30 a.m., on YouTube.

The YouTube link will be sent in the Sunday morning email.

How to Give to the Church

You are asked to use our credit card service (which can be reached by the link or the On-line Giving button on our website), the very easy to use Text-to-Give (1-833-361-5796), or checks may be sent to the office. The on-line giving gives you the option to identify the contribution and use the memo line for checks. A tutorial video on Text-to-Give is here. After setting up an initial “profile” these options are easy to use for subsequent donations.

On The Patio
Mondays from 6-8pm,
Tuesdays from 9-11am, and Saturdays from 3-5pm | On the UUCT Patio at 4831 E. 22nd Street

Introducing, Open Patio Hours! Come enjoy some fellowship and community on the patio at UUCT. The focus of these events is mostly social with optional participatory activities and the occasional opportunity for causing some holy trouble. The Saturday event will be created with families with young kids in mind; UUCT will pay for playground monitors so the kids can play while parents and guardians take a break. The first Saturday event will be on December 18th, and then will resume on January 1st. As soon as our policies allow, these gatherings will move indoors into Holland so that all can enjoy some time in our sacred space. Please wear a mask. All are welcome!

We will be taking a break between Christmas And New years. Hope to see you before, or after.

UUCT 2nd Thursday, Book Club

The January 2022 meeting will be IN PERSON! On the UUCT patio. Bring a chair and your mask.
Set up & chat from 9:00-9:30am, book discussion from 9:30-10:30am.
Jan 13, 2022: The Overstory by Richard Powers, 2018
Discussion leader: Marge H
“The Overstory” is a complex novel that begins with several apparently unrelated stories about people throughout the country and across the centuries: … a Norwegian immigrant … a video game pioneer ... a soldier in the Vietnam War whose life is saved when a 300-year-old banyan catches his body falling from a plane. “He owes his own life to a tree,” Powers writes. That, in short, is the point of “The Overstory”: We all owe our lives to trees, these massive air purifiers and soil conditioners that have made human civilization possible. – Wash Post review

Oct 8-15: TEXnewMEX TUUR

"Come with us to West Texas where Judge Roy Bean was “the only law west of the Pecos,” and to southern New Mexico to visit an old-style Mexican Plaza and the research center for the spaceship landing in Roswell! The highlight will be Big Bend National Park where we will stay in the only lodging within the park. On the way we will be looking for the mysterious “Marfa Lights,” which have appeared to many since 1883, and see the mural art and the galleries of the tri-county area near Fort Davis."

Registration is now open for the next exciting UUCT TUUR. Join a group of adventurous wanderers as we travel to New Mexico and West Texas to see amazing examples of the region's culture, art, history and the paranormal from the aliens of Roswell to the mysterious Marfa lights. See the attached itinerary for all the details!
