Skinner Sermon Award, 2020
UUCT has something to celebrate! Rev. Bethany's sermon "Humanitarian Aid is Never a Crime" wonthe Skinner Sermon Award! This is an award given to a sermon that best expresses Unitarian Universalism's social principles. Rev. Bethany preached this sermon at UUCT the Sunday right after Dr. Scott Warren was found not guilty of two felonies by a jury of his peers. She has since preached an adapted version of this sermon at other congregations. This sermon will be distributed to Unitarian Universalists around the country in the coming weeks. This is a celebration of our minister, our congregation, and our partners in ministry, No More Deaths.
This award comes with an honorarium of $500, which Rev. Bethany intends to split betweenNo More Deathsand theTucson Second Chance Community Bail Fund.
Many thanks to UUCT member Howard Tolley who submitted this sermon for this award, with Rev. Bethany's permission.
You can listen to the podcast of this sermon on theUUCT website.

Share the Plate
The June Share the Plate recipient will beEmerge! Center Against Domestic Abuse. That recipient was approved by the SJC. Emerge! has seen a COVID-19-related surge in demand for its services.
July through December
In July 2020, UUCT will go from 1 Share the Plate per month to 2 per month, a change approved by the SJC and UUCT board of directors. However, the SJC approved a 6-month plan beginning in July and will adopt a new plan later for the second half of the fiscal year.
The 2 Share the Plate collections each of these 6 months will be given to 1 nonprofit recipient. This approach is intended to address heightened needs of Share the Plate recipients during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Donations for each share the plate will be accepted from the 1st of the month, to the 15th of the month for the first recipient, and from the 15th of the month, to the

Our Shelter Partner in Mexico Needs a Few Things
The Attention Center for the Migrant Exodus (C.A.M.E.) Shelter in Agua Prieta, Mexico, has asked for UUCT’s help. In the past, our members have donated food and clothing, but the shelter for asylum seekers asked specifically for donations of these supplies:
  • Pine-Sol
  • Bleach
  • Hand Soap
  • Detergent
  • Liquid Dishwashing soap
  • Clorox Wipes
  • Diapers/Pampers, sizes 3 and 4
  • A couple of industrial mops and brooms
  • Toothpaste (no need for toothbrushes)
  • sanitary protection (tampons and pads)
  • deodorant
  • shampoo
  • dental floss
  • lotion
  • sunscreen
  • antibacterial hand soap

Invest in Ed Petition Drive
On Thursday, June 18 and Saturday, June 20,from 7:00-9:00 A.M., there will be a drive-by petition signing in the church parking lot for the INVESTinED citizens' initiative. This is to approve a 3.5% income tax surcharge on earnings over $250k for single households and $500k for joint households, affecting approximately 1% of Arizona residents. Arizonans making $1000 a day will pay about $11 a day. This will raise $940 million in new permanent funding for public education. Everyone please make every effort to come on one of those days to add your name to support public education in our state! This will be our only chance to sign these petitions. We will be wearing masks, and you can use your own pen or a new pen that will be available.
Thanks so much for your support!
This will also be another chance to bring donations for the immigrant shelter in Agua Prieta and to buy coffee from Cafe Justo.

Its more important than ever to stay justice centered in our faith, as decisions made now will affect climate justice and structural inequity for years to come. Join Rev. Tina Squire the third Friday of each month at noon for a book discussion. June will feature On Fire: The Burning Case for a Green New Deal, just in time for author Naomi Klein's Ware Lecture at this year's GA. Email Scams
Several UUCT members have received a SCAM email that is supposedly from Rev. Bethany asking for the member to buy a gift card for the homeless. Rev. Bethany will never ask for money to directly help her or for a cause not sponsored by the church.
The hallmark of a SCAM is an element of urgency; take time to think and cross-check any email. DO NOT ACT ON AN EMAIL/TEXT REQUEST FOR MONEY FROM REV. BETHANY OR OTHER CHURCH PERSON. You may forward the email toThis email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.if you are in doubt about the authenticity of any email related to the church.
Thank you,
Your UUCT Staff, Board of Trustees, and Finance Committee.
