Social Justice Updates

Share the Plate Updates
The Social Justice Council (SJC) at its May 5 meeting approved a 6-month schedule and process for UUCT’s Share the Plate donations.
The May Share the Plate will be Habitat for Humanity Tucson, as scheduled.https://www.habitattucson.org/
The June Share the Plate recipient will be Emerge! Center Against Domestic Abuse. That recipient was approved by the SJC. Emerge! has seen a COVID-19-related surge in demand for its services. (Desert Voices, the previously approved June recipient, has ceased operations for the foreseeable future.)
July through December
In July 2020, UUCT will go from 1 Share the Plate per month to 2 per month, a change approved by the SJC and UUCT board of directors. However, the SJC approved a 6-month plan beginning in July and will adopt a new plan later for the second half of the fiscal year.
The 2 Share the Plate collections each of these 6 months will be given to 1 nonprofit recipient. This approach is intended to address heightened needs of Share the Plate recipients during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Vote Now
The congregational vote to select the Share the Plate recipients for July-December 2020 is open. The last day of voting will be May 24. Members and friends can vote via an online ballot athttps://forms.gle/wYDib4Wgpdqx9eWg7
Before the end of 2020, another election will be held to select the Share the Plate recipients for January-June 2021.
How to donate
Checks with “Share the Plate” in the memo line can be mailed to the office. Online donations can be made athttps://uuctucson.org/donate.On that donation page you will find an option for Share the Plate as well as designations for pledge fulfillment, general donation, and Minister’s Discretionary Fund.
Cafe Justo Coffee and Clothes Drive
Sales - and delivery - of Café Justo coffee are continuing. This Social Justice Council (SJC) project benefits small-scale, shade-grown organic coffee growers in Chiapas, Mexico.

UUJAZ Book Group
Friday May 15th 12pm
Its more important than ever to stay justice centered in our faith, as decisions made now will affect climate justice and structural inequity for years to come. Join Rev. Tina Squire the third Friday of each month at noon for a book discussion. In May we'll start with An Indigenous People's History of the United States, the UUA Common Read for 2020, by Roxanne Ortiz. June will feature On Fire: The Burning Case for a Green New Deal, just in time for author Naomi Klein's Ware Lecture at this year's GA. Sign up here: https://forms.gle/c9GCkkbmNPpGgR7ZA
Transforming Hearts Webinar
Thursdays every other week at 7pm, starting May 14th
Missed the first session? No worries! There's still time to learn how to create congregations that are fully inclusive and affirming of the full breadth of gender diversity. Over six sessions we will deeply explore the intersection of trans identity, spirituality, and faith community, and gain the grounding, context, and skills to transform yourself and your congregation.
Email Scams
Several UUCT members have received a SCAM email that is supposedly from Rev. Bethany asking for the member to buy a gift card for the homeless. Rev. Bethany will never ask for money to directly help her or for a cause not sponsored by the church.
The hallmark of a SCAM is an element of urgency; take time to think and cross-check any email. DO NOT ACT ON AN EMAIL/TEXT REQUEST FOR MONEY FROM REV. BETHANY OR OTHER CHURCH PERSON. You may forward the email toThis email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.if you are in doubt about the authenticity of any email related to the church.
Thank you,
Your UUCT Staff, Board of Trustees, and Finance Committee.

RE at Home Resources
Are you interested in "doing church" at home? I am collecting resources for at home religious education both on the Parenting Club facebook page and in a google drive. The folder is available to everyone! You'll find activities that take 5 minutes and one that take 5 days, so you're in control of how much time you spend on RE.
Game Night (virtually, of course)
May 14 | 7-8pm | Zoom
Need a distraction from finals or well... the rest of the world? Bring the family for a virtual game night. We'll try out games like Pictionary, Apples to Apples, and maybe Vampire. All you need is a zoom connection and some patience as we figure this out!
We'll be using the same login as Social Hour (see above).
Weather Trackers
May 22 | 5-6pm | Zoom
Are you curious about the future of Religious Education, Lifespan Faith Development, and 2nd Hour? Do you have some time to give us feedback about what you’ve seen and what you’d like to see? Consider attending the "Weather Trackers" meeting!
This team will be composed of folks from across the church to "track the weather" in and around Lifespan Faith Development programming (Sunday Morning RE, 2nd Hour, Thursday Night Lights, TUUYA, Parenting Club, and etc.). Share your thoughts and input!
