Justice as a Spiritual Practice
Sunday, January 12, 2020 10:30 a.m.
As Unitarian Universalists, we see our justice work as living out our values into the world. We covenant that "service is our prayer." What might it look like to create a Spiritual Practice of justice work?

Meet Janine Gelsinger, the new Executive Director of UUJAZ (Unitarian Universalist Justice Arizona Network). As she shares about her life and the path that led her to this role, and builds relationships in our congregation, she'll invite us to consider our relationship with social justice activism, as well as spiritual practice, and suggest a way to have the two meet in a daily ritual.

Worship Leader: Janine Gelsinger, Executive Director of UUJAZ
Worship Associate: Brenda Lundt
Music: Chris Tackett and Desert chorale

Ella Baker: Leader of Leaders
Sunday, January 19, 2020 10:30 a.m.
On this Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day weekend, come hear about Civil Rights leader, Ella Baker and learn about her style of bottom-up, leader-full movements. Where does power lie in leader-full movements? What can Ella Baker's leadership inspire us to lead and follow in new ways?

Worship Leader: Rev. Bethany Russell-Lowe
Worship Associate: Josue Ortiz
Music: Chris Tackett

Evening Worship:
Thursday, January 23 6-8 p.m., Holland Sanctuary
"I brought myself to be with you, hoping that by inhaling the compassion, the courage, the hope found here, I can exhale the fear, the selfishness, the separateness I keep so close to my skin" (Kristen L. Harper).

Do you need to take a breather? To breathe deeply after the hustle and bustle of the end of the year? Maybe you are seeking a way to connect with others? Join us in January to reflect on the power of breath through meditation and song.

Each service begins at 5:30 p.m. with a Bring Your Own dinner to eat with friends. At 6 p.m., we will start a 45 minute service with a dessert potluck after. When the weather cooperates, we’ll drag out the fire pit and toast marshmallows!

Pagan tip of the month
I like to use Imbolc as an opportunity to do some early spring cleaning, and cleansing my space of unwanted or old energy is no exception! You can do the same, if you desire.

Ring a bell in the corners of your home, smudge with local dried herbs, spritz some salt water, use your besom (or any broom) to sweep the dog hair and the stale energy out the front door, and say an incantation to your own house spirits!

As you're cleaning, be mindful to invite in what is welcome and block out what is not. And consider donating any clothing or items you don't need to a local shelter.
