Zoom Meetings

Dec-Feb 2nd Thu @ 9:30: Book Club

The UUCT Book Club has chosen books for the next three monthly meetings.  Hopefully this provides enough time to purchase/borrow and read the books.

December 10, 2020: “Golden Poppies” by Laila Ibrahim, copyright 2020.
Diana B. will lead the discussion.
"The Fifteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1870, guarantees the right to vote despite race, color, or previous servitude. In Golden Poppies, author Laila Ibrahim explores the story of continuing racial prejudice in 1890s America. The plot revolves around two families, both headed by strong matriarchal women who had lived together on a Virginia plantation. One was the plantation owner’s white daughter, and the other was a slave."

January 14, 2021: “Spying on the South” by Tony Horwitz, copyright 2019.
Carolyn C. will lead the discussion.
"In Spying on the South, Horwitz may have found his true historical alter-ego in Frederick Law Olmsted, the elite Northeastern adventurer and prolific writer about the American South in the 1850s who later became America’s great landscape artist and designer of parks all over the United States."

February 11, 2021: One Thousand White Women by Jim Fergus, copyright 1998.
Lori Sussman will lead the discussion.

"Based on an actual historical event but told through fictional diaries, this is the story of a remarkable woman who travels west in 1875 and marries the Chief of the Cheyenne Nation."

We meet via Zoom on the 2nd Thursday of the month.  I open the meeting by 9:20am for general conversation.  At 9:30am, we start the discussion of the book.
