Genderqueer and Here

July 10, 2011

Katerina O. Sinclair, PhD

Drawing on professional, personal, and spiritual experience, I will present the current problems facing lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, and intersexed youth in the U.S. in general and in Tucson specifically. I will also explain why people are homophobic from a psychological standpoint, and what we can do to help these folks as well. Finally, I will give an overview of current programs in the area designed to help youth develop in positive, meaningful ways, and how our congregation can get involved.

What YoUU Can Do to Help LGBTQA Youth in Tucson

Printable PDF Version

WINGSPAN Programs

Homeless Youth Project

Donations of money and goods are always needed to help homeless queer youth in Tucson! Suggested items include: non-perishable food, feminine and other hygiene products, new packs of underwear, socks, and bras. In the fall, school supplies and backpacks are needed. Other suggestions include low-income bus passes (Wingspan can facilitate this) and gift cards to the Dollar Tree or Frys (can be UUCT cards, too, and then money will be sent back to the church!). Anti-Violence Project

Donate an hour per week or month toward answering crisis line calls for LGBTQA people who've experienced violence or need resources. Next training is July 16th & 17th. Also, they are creating a “warm line” for LGBT youth to discuss how bullying and other forms of violence affect their lives that will operate from 3-8pm Monday thru Saturday. Next training: August 6th. Contact: Kristi Smith, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or (520) 624-1779 ext 119.

Eon Youth Lounge

For one night a month or week or every day, as the spirit moves you, work the front desk at the Eon Youth Lounge. Provide a friendly face and a safe space during drop-in hours in the afternoons and evenings. Or help facilitate support groups, including a general youth group on Fridays or a homeless youth group on Wednesdays that teaches life skills. Or become a tutor for summer school programs in the lounge (math tutors are especially needed!). Provide positive, accepting role models and academic support at once! Volunteers can also help with coordinating or supervising special events (like Eon Prom) or providing goods (like food) or advertisement for these events.
